EzSEO Newsletter # 52

Hi again

My baby daughter has been up most nights this week keeping both my wife and I awake. I don't remember a time when I was so exhausted, even as a school teacher! At times I hear the baby crying when she isn't, and my mind is starting to play tricks on me. Does this sound familiar to those of you who have had kids?

This morning when I got up for her 7am feed I just couldn't get out of bed and persuaded my wife to do it instead. As I drifted between consciousness and dreamland, I started thinking about Salvador Dali. I think his pictures now make sense. He must have had sleep deprivation before he painted...

Well, now you know why the newsletter is a day late ;o)

OK, let's get on.

This week:

1. Wordtracker Part II

2. A lesson to learn about marketing

---------------------------------------------------
1. Wordtracker Part II
---------------------------------------------------

In part I of the Wordtracker mini-series (newsletter #50), we looked at why Wordtracker is the number one choice among professional webmasters. Today, I want to start looking at the various features of Wordtracker, how it works, and how to use it. I would love to be able to use screenshots in this series, but the limitations of a text only newsletter obviously prevent this. However, as per usual, when the entire mini-series is finished, I will publish it as a PDF file and put it on the members bonus page.

Today we will be looking at some of the more boring aspects, but they are important to understand if you want to become proficient at using this fantastic tool. Next week we will take a hands on approach and you can follow along as I go through the first of several keyword research strategies I use.

This course will assume that you have a subscription to Wordtracker and are not using the trial version which has limitations. You can order a day at Wordtracker for just a few dollars:

Before we look at the interface, it is important to understand how Wordtracker works and where it gets its results from.

Wordtracker tracks and stores search data from two MetaCrawler search engines and keeps this data for the last 60 days at any one time. New data gradually replaces old data. The two search engines used are:

http://metacrawler.com

and

http://dogpile.com

A metacrawler search engine is one that queries several of the main search engines to compile its own results e.g. Google, Yahoo and Altavista may all be queried when you run a search at Dogpile, and Dogpile will collate those results and output what it considers the best sites from those three engines.

Whenever a search is made at either of the two metacrawlers noted above, the search term is recorded in the Wordtracker database. Over 175 million searches are recorded every month in this way, and all are stored in Word tracker's database.

One thing to think about here. Wordtracker keeps the last two months of search results in its database at any one time. If you do a search now on Wordtracker for "Halloween", you are likely to find a lot of Halloween related phrases. If you do the same search in three months time, you are going to get a lot less phrases related to this topic. Bearing this in mind, if you want to target seasonal products on your site, do your keyword research towards the end of that season to make sure you capture relevant phrases made during that season.

OK, let's log in to Wordtracker.

On logging into Wordtracker you are taken to the main menu screen which gives you access to the 7 main sections of Wordtracker. If you are ever lost in Wordtracker and want to get back to this screen, click the Home button in the menu at the very top of the screen you are on.

We will look at the 7 sections in more detail and show you examples of using some of these sections, but let's quickly go over them here by way of an introduction.

Section 1 - KEYWORD UNIVERSE
The Keyword Universe is a section of Wordtracker that lets you find keywords in much the same way that the trial of Wordtracker does. If you are new to Wordtracker, this is probably where you have done most of your keyword research.

Section 2 - VIEW ALL RESULTS
Wordtracker keeps records of all your keyword searches, competition analysis etc. The View All Results screen allows you to see the results of your research in one convenient place. From here you have options like exporting or e-mailing those keywords and data.

Section 3 - KEYWORD PROJECTS
If you work on several websites at the same time, you will want to keep the keywords for each project separate. The Keyword Projects screen allows you to do just this. You can keep up to 7 different projects on the go at any one time, with up to 50,000 keywords per project.
When you log out, and then back into Wordtracker, all your data remains in your Wordtracker account. Note if you use daily subscriptions every month or so, your projects will stay intact (even though your subscription is not current) for several months. Just sign up with the same details next time you get your daily subscription and your projects and keywords will still be there.

Section 4 - FULL SEARCH
This section is similar to Keyword Universe but with a much simpler interface.

Section 5 - MULTIPLE SEARCH
The Multiple Search screen allows you to carry out a range of different searches. Compressed, comprehensive, misspellings etc. We will look at what each of these search options do later in this series.

Section 6 - TOP 1000 REPORTS
Two options here, long-term (over the last 60 days) or short-term (last 36 hours). These reports show which keywords have been searched for over those periods. If you are having a problem coming up with ideas for your latest site, look at these reports and see the top 1000 searches made. Use these phrases as spring-boards for your own imagination.
The short-term report is great for getting the inside scoop on what people are looking for in the last few days.

Section 7 - WORDTRACKER SUPPORT
Speaks for itself. The support section offers a knowledge base - answers to frequently asked questions, documentation, and a way of getting e-mail support to your questions or problems.

OK, we are nearly ready to start using Wordtracker.

Next week we get hands on. We will visit the Keyword Universe and brainstorm and research one profitable niche topic, collecting thousands of keywords in minutes. I will even show you what to do with those keywords to separate the wheat from the chaff. You will of course be free to use this and future keyword research yourself if you fancy building a site around the topics I choose during this mini-series.

---------------------------------------------------
2. A lesson to learn about marketing
---------------------------------------------------

Last week I mentioned that I had bought Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Google Adwords.

At the time I had not been through all the material supplied with the course, but this week I have been ploughing through it. The main book delivers what it promises on the sales page though I do have a few minor criticisms which I will put in my full review on my website as soon as I have finished writing it. However, criticisms aside, this really is the best package I have bought or been given to review about Google Adwords. There is just so much stuff though that I can see a lot of people buying and never using a lot of the material.

What has impressed me alot is the way Perry markets the package. Not just before you buy, but the after sales follow up and course upgrades sent via e-mail (I received an upgrade this week).

When you sell your own products, it is vitally important to keep your customers happy - Perry achieves this with what appears to be a personal interest in your success. I would bet though that he is using autoresponders to send out pre-written information in a timely manner. This is one of the most powerful tools for marketers today. I have been using them more and more in my own business with great success.

If you are marketing anything online, you really should check out what Aweber has to offer. They are the company I use and highly recommend:

They have a free trial so you can put the software to work before you spend a penny.

Put how can autoresponders help you make more sales? Well, there is a number of different ways. Here is one example:

If you are a Nicheology member (the subscription site I recommended a while ago that gives you your own products, but has since stopped taking new members).

One of their latest products is "Healthy Sleep: A Guide To Natural Sleep Remedies". As a Nicheology member, this book is mine to sell as my own. I always customise them myself and add some affiliate links throughout the book, but the donkey work has already been done.

Imagine building a niche site around this topic. I did the keyword research at Wordtracker an hour ago, ran the results through my KRA-WT tool, and I now have over 100 profitable keywords ready and waiting. Most of these 100 keywords can easily get into the top 3 at Google. I can easily build this site in one week, and by doing so, I should be guaranteed around 400 visitors per day to the site when finished. The site will obviously sell my Customised Sleep Remedy eBook, but if I put a pop-up on the site offering Sleep remedy tips I can make a lot more sales.

For popups I use Popup Master Pro since it pops up even when users have popups disabled in their browsers.

The popup would offer sleep rememdy tip for free in a series of e-mails. It would then collect the e-mails and my autoresponder course would send out weekly tips but also pre-selling my Sleep Remedy book, I should make money on sales of my book as my visitors learn the value of the book in the autoresponder series. If I add some affiliate links into my autoresponder course, I can also make some sales of other products along the way.

Add in a little Google Adsense, and I have a 24 hour money making website that will require next to zero maintenance.

Watching how other marketers promote & sell their products, capture e-mail addresses and then follow up with after-sales info, we can all learn a great deal of valuable information that will make our business better, stronger and more profitable.

That's it for this week.
